Policies for Visiting Scholars
Approved by the administration and President Lin on July 30, 2002
I. Objective To invite scholars, from both Taiwan and abroad, to give lectures, hold seminars and consult with faculty and students to promote cooperation with other universities and companies.
II. Qualifications We give priority to individuals who are currently employed by major higher education and research institutions. Individuals who have demonstrated exceptional work and attained high honor in their respective fields are also encouraged to apply. Visiting scholars must be one of the following to be considered:
1. A Senior Research Associate of internationally acclaimed research institutions.
2. A Professor or Research Fellow
3. An Associate Professor or Associate Research Fellow
4. A Distinguished Assistant Professor or Assistant Research Fellow
5. A Professional who has achieved international distinction.
III. Activities Below are four areas in which visiting scholars can participate:
1. Specialized Seminars
2. Short-Term Research Assistance or Technical Guidance
3. Consulting
4. As a part-time or visiting professor
IV. Application Procedure
1. Financial assistance applications for overseas visiting scholars must be submitted no later than two months prior to the visit. Applications submitted within 2 months of the visit will be considered if accompanied with a valid explanation for late submission and a demonstration of financial need.
2. Applicants must submit an application, a curriculum vitae along with a list of publication for financial assistance.
V. Financial Assistance
1. The inviter should first submit an application to the National Science Counsel or the Ministry of Education for financial assistance. If no financial support is granted, the inviter can then apply for university funding.
2. Travel Expenses and Living Allowances for Oversea Visiting Scholars:
i. World-Renowned Research Associates -- One round-trip Business class ticket and a daily allowance of NT$10,000.
Professors or Research Fellows -- One coach class ticket and a daily allowance of NT$7,000.
Associate Professor or Associate Research Fellows -- One round-trip coach class ticket and a daily allowance of NT$5,000.ii. The maximum duration for financial assistance is 14 days. Visitors must submit a detailed description of their activities and expenditures.
iii. Daily allowances are subject to a 20% income tax. The university will serve as a proxy for such taxes. The visitor is required to sign the receipt.
3. Local scholars are awarded an hourly wage of NT$1,500.
4. Part-time or visiting professors will receive compensation based on experience and other factors.
VI. The above stipulations will be in effect once approved by the administration
and the President. Revisions will also be in effect upon their approvals.
